Facades on both streets and roofs: inscription by decree of 16 October 1930
Origin and history
The house located at 1, rue du Conseil and 2, Grand-Rue in Turckheim is an emblematic building of Alsatian heritage. Built in the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, it is distinguished by its curved openings (full and low arch) on the ground floor, adorned with ground chambranles. These architectural details, as well as its vantals of ancient doors, suggest a Renaissance influence, typical of the bourgeois houses of the time in Alsace. The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 16 October 1930, protecting its facades on both streets and roofs.
The location of this house, at the corner of Council Street and the Grand-Rue, reflects its importance in the medieval and reborn urban fabric of Turckheim. At that time, the city, located in the Upper Rhine, was a dynamic commercial and artisanal crossroads, integrated into the Holy Roman Empire. Houses like this often served as a place of residence for local merchants or notables, while sometimes sheltering economic activities on the ground floor.
The 1930 inscription underlines the heritage value of this building, representative of the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Alsace. The protected elements — facades and roofs — bear witness to the construction techniques of the period, combining local tradition and stylistic innovations. Today, this house contributes to the historic attractiveness of Turckheim, a city known for its preserved medieval centre and winemaking past.
