Origin and history

The house located at 22 rue du Cardinal-de-Fleury in Lodève is a vestige of a large building from the beginning of the seventeenth century, originally measuring 27 meters of facade with an inner courtyard. In the 19th century, the northern and southern parts were demolished and rebuilt, leaving only a narrow central area with a pedestrian door and a straight-flyed staircase separated by a deciphered wall. This door, classified as a Historic Monument in 1963, is distinguished by its full arch, its striking key in bossing, and a frame adorned with crossettes and slits.

The door, framed with pilasters supporting a broken triangular pediment, features a wooden vantail composed of rectangular and quarter-circle panels, reinforced by round-headed and losangic nails. The ensemble suggests an origin between the 16th and 17th centuries, with major developments around 1800, probably incorporating old alleys and remnants of the urban enclosure. The house thus illustrates the architectural transformations associated with the urbanization of Lodève.

The building, partially preserved, bears witness to the construction and decoration techniques of the modern era, while reflecting subsequent adaptations to meet residential needs. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1963 highlights the heritage value of its door, the only protected element, and its characteristic staircase.
