House with its gallery on courtyard (cad. A 65): by order of 28 February 1994
Origin and history
The house in Saint-Loup-Lamairé, classified as a Historical Monument, is a typical example of medieval civil architecture of the 15th century. It is distinguished by its structure in brick, stone and wooden panels, as well as by its gallery on courtyard, unique in its kind in the commune. The building, organized on four levels, retains original elements such as 15th century chimneys and tomette floors. Its stone screw staircase and communicating rooms reflect a coherent spatial organization, characteristic of the urban dwellings of that time.
The east front of the house is pierced by two bend-shaped windows, while the west front overlooks a courtyard lined with terraced gardens and a two-storey gallery. This gallery, built of traditional materials, is considered a rare vestige of local heritage. The house integrates into a city centre having retained much of its medieval and 18th century urban structure, with several other houses of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its registration as a Historic Monument in 1994 underscores its heritage importance.
The building illustrates urban life in the Middle Ages, where wooden houses were used as both housing and workspace for artisans or merchants. The preservation of chimneys and tomettes reflects the construction techniques and lifestyle of the time. The location of the house at 7 rue Sainte-Catherine makes it a point of interest in the historical fabric of Saint-Loup-Lamairé, although its precise location is considered only fair (note of 5/10).
