The entrance door and the staircase ramp (Box DX 192): inscription by order of 8 July 1946

Origin and history

The house located at 29 rue du Cygne in Tours is a 16th century civil building, typical of Renaissance urban architecture in Touraine. Its most remarkable element is its single front door, divided into six panels, whose upper middle panel has a carved pattern composed of palmettes and volutes. These ornaments reflect the influence of ancient motifs rediscovered at that time, integrated in a style still marked by late Gothic.

The wrought iron staircase ramp, combined with this door, presents a start decorated with volutes, illustrating the know-how of local metalworkers. These artistic details led to the protection of these elements by an order of inscription under the Historical Monuments on 8 July 1946. The precise location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10), corresponds to the historic address of 29 rue du Swan, in the city centre of Tours.

At the time of its construction, Tours was a dynamic city, economic and cultural capital of the Touraine, taking advantage of its proximity to the Loire castles and its role in river trade. Bourgeois houses like this bear witness to the prosperity of local merchants and artisans, often linked to textile or winemaking activities. Their architecture, combining functionality and decoration, also reflected the social status of their owners.

Today, the house does not seem open to visit, and its current use (private housing, business or other) is not specified in the available sources. Only the gate and the stair ramp enjoy heritage protection, highlighting their historical and aesthetic value in the urban landscape.
