The statue of the Virgin with the Child with its niche dug in the corner of the wall, at the height of the first floor (Box D 1077): inscription by decree of 2 February 1963

Origin and history

This house in Arlanc, dating from the 16th century, is distinguished by a niche dug in the corner of a wall, at the height of the first floor. The niche, framed by pilasters surmounted by pinacles, houses a statue of the Virgin holding the Child, typical of a transition between Gothic Mannerism and Renaissance academicism. Its prismatic base and its arch in basket handle decorated with a cross in relief underline its artistic and religious character.

The statue, designed to fit perfectly into the niche, represents the Virgin with a wavy hair, laying a hand on the child's knees. This monument, classified by decree in 1963, illustrates the importance of Marian representations in the civil architecture of the period. The precise location, 9 Rue Charles Faucon, and its inscription under the title of Historic Monuments make it a remarkable local heritage.

Official protection specifically concerns the statue and its niche, reflecting their historical and artistic value. Although details about sponsors or artisans remain unknown, the work bears witness to the stylistic influences of its time, between medieval tradition and renaissant innovations. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, facilitating its identification in the urban fabric of Arlanc.
