Origin and history

The former Reboul hotel, located at 13 rue du Port in Clermont-Ferrand, is an emblematic monument of the 17th and 18th centuries. Ranked as a Historic Monument, it is characterized by a majestic entrance door decorated with vantals carved in the Louis XV style, opening onto a vaulted corridor leading to a remarkable stairwell. This passage, marked by a curved arch, serves a staircase composed of two straight flights separated by an intermediate landing, whose structure rests partly on a crawling arc.

The wrought iron ramp of the staircase, a perfect symmetry but betraying a still naive technique, is considered one of the first achievements of the 18th century Clermontian ironworks workshop. Its geometric motifs (circles, C-rolls, curved leaves) and its central flagship make an early example of local craftsmanship. The vantals of the interior doors, also decorated with Louis XV mouldings, complete this architectural ensemble protected by decree of 19 February 1964.

The building, now privately owned, illustrates the evolution of iron and carpentry techniques between the 17th and 18th centuries. Its staircase, with wrought iron ramps and structural arches, reflects the influence of classical and rococo styles in the auvergnat. The accuracy of its location (noted 6/10) and its historic address make it a landmark of the Clermontian heritage, although its access is restricted.

The protected elements specifically include the right stairwell with its ramp, the entrance door, and a second stairwell to the left of the hall. These features, combined with the ornamentation of the doors (Louis XV mouldings), highlight the high social status of former occupants, probably an affluent family or a local personality, as evidenced by the name "Hotel de Reboul".
