Origin and history
The house in Riom, dating from the 16th century, is a typical example of French Renaissance civil architecture. Its particularity lies in its inner courtyard, where a stone staircase features a balcony decorated with sculptures, including a lion's head surrounded by interlaces and a shield. The canned pilasters, surmounted by ionic capitals, as well as an inscription bearing the date of 1561 above a window, testify to the ornamental richness of the era. The date of 1562, engraved on the court bottom elevation, confirms the period of construction.
Classified as a Historic Monument since 1927, this house owes its protection to its facades and staircase, emblematic elements of its heritage. The inscription by decree of 9 February 1927 underlines the importance of these sets, reflecting the influence of Italian and local arts in Riom's domestic architecture. The precise address, 5 rue du Commerce, and the associated GPS coordinates allow to locate this monument, although the cartographic accuracy is considered poor (note of 5/10).
Architectural elements, such as the shield and carved motifs, suggest an order by an easy owner, probably a notable or a local merchant. Riom, then the administrative and judicial centre of the region, attracted a prosperous bourgeoisie capable of financing such achievements. The absence of sources detailing the identity of the sponsor or architect, however, limits the precise knowledge of its history.
