Origin and history
The house located at 4 rue Saint-Julien in Albi is a representative example of the Albige civil architecture of the late 16th century. These houses, protected as Historical Monuments, are distinguished by their two-storey structure in corbellation, the first very prominent and the second surmounted by a souleilhé (galetas in the clear floor). Their wooden panels facades, lined with bricks laid horizontally or obliquely, form a characteristic pattern of crucifixes. The street number 8 keeps a stair ramp dated 1601, showing the chronological accuracy of these constructions.
The houses on this street embody the "medium" type of Albigois Renaissance dwellings, combining functionality and decoration. Some have preserved sculptures on their panels of wood, highlighting the care given to their ornaments. Their protection by order of 20 December 1924 (inscription of facades) attests to their heritage value. These buildings also reflect local constructive techniques, where wood and brick combine to meet the urban needs of the time, while marking the visual identity of the historic centre of Albi.
Their narrow street layout and uniform style suggest coherent urban planning, typical of prosperous cities from the southwest to the Renaissance. These houses, though modest, illustrate the economic and cultural dynamism of Albi, then marked by the pastel trade and an expanding market bourgeoisie. Their preservation offers today a tangible testimony to the daily life and architectural aesthetics of this pivotal period.
