Origin and history

The houses at 34 and 36 Chaussée Street in Vire (Calvados, Normandy) were originally a unique mansion built in the 15th century. Their architecture reflected the medieval civil style of the region, with remarkable facades and roofs, protected by an inscription to the Historical Monuments on January 25, 1932. These buildings illustrated Vire's urban heritage before its destruction, offering a rare example of affluent habitat in Lower Normandy.

The destruction of the houses occurred during the bombings of the Battle of Normandy in 1944, in the context of the fighting for the liberation of France. Their disappearance is part of the major architectural losses suffered by the city during the Second World War. The documented remains, such as Mr. Amiard's drawings kept in Gallica, are now proof of their existence and characteristics.

The site was located in the historic centre of Vire, a strategic city since the Middle Ages, marked by its strong position between the Duchy of Normandy and the Kingdom of France. Chaussée Street, a major artery, then concentrated on bourgeois dwellings and commercial activities. The Hotel of Numbers 34-36, by its status as a Historic Monument, stressed the heritage importance of this area before its destruction.

No information is available on original owners or sponsors or on specific uses of the premises beyond their residential function. The sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) are limited to architectural and administrative data, without details on daily life or specific events related to these houses before 1944.
