House as well as the adjoining enclosure (Box IO 258): inscription by order of 11 October 1937

Origin and history

The houses at Place Étienne-Dolet in Bourges are among the old canonical houses that surrounded the cloister of the cathedral. These buildings, characteristic of the eighteenth century, consist of two distinct houses: one in retreat from the square, the other perpendicular. A small entrance door decorated with a pediment with a shell marks one of the entrances, reflecting a typical architectural style of the era.

These houses were listed as Historic Monument by order of 11 October 1937, including both the house and the adjoining enclosures (Cadastre IO 258). Their precise location, in 14 place Étienne-Dolet (formerly 6 place Étienne-Dolet), is attested in the base Mérimée. The accuracy of their geographical location is considered fair, with an index of 5 out of 10 depending on the available data.

Place Étienne-Dolet, where these houses are located, is located in the historic centre of Bourges, a city marked by its religious and architectural heritage. These canonical houses bear witness to the spatial and social organization linked to the cathedral, playing a role in the life of the canons and, more broadly, in the urban history of the city. Their preservation makes it possible today to study 18th-century lifestyles and civil architecture in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
