The wooden house at 5 Rue des Sources in Bernay is a remarkable example of 16th century civil architecture. This type of construction, characteristic of Norman cities, uses a wooden structure filled with torchi or bricks, offering both solidity and aesthetics. The house was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 6 September 1933, thus emphasizing its heritage value and its importance for the preservation of the old building.

Bernay, located in the department of Eure in Normandy, was at that time a dynamic city, marked by commercial and craft activities. Wood-paned houses often served as houses for merchants or artisans, while sometimes sheltering shops on the ground floor.
