Origin and history
The house located in the 13 place au Beurre in Quimper is a 17th century building. This building, classified as Historic Monument, is distinguished by its typical architecture of the modern era in Brittany. Its listing in the Historical Monuments Inventory in 1956 specifically concerns its street façade and the corresponding roof slope, highlighting its heritage interest.
This residence was the residence of the canon of Quimper, François de Boisbilly, born in Morlaix in 1736 and died in Quimper in 1786. A notable figure of the Breton clergy, he was a member of the Chapter of Quimper in the States of Brittany held at Nantes in 1767. His critical spirit and his poetic talent made him famous in the provincial salons, although his commitment earned him troubles with power: a satirical song against the Duke of Aiguillon, governor of Brittany, cost him six months imprisonment at the Bastille.
The building, now protected, illustrates the role of canons in the Breton society of the eighteenth century, mixing religious influence, political commitment and cultural life. Although its exact location has been discussed (the GPS address sometimes suggesting the rue du Salle), its historic anchor remains inseparable from the place au Butre, the living heart of Quimper.
