Origin and history

The house located at 22 rue Gutenberg in Strasbourg is a building built during the 2nd half of the 17th century, representative of the civil architecture of this period. It stands out for its façade, which has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1929, bearing witness to the heritage preserved despite the destructions of 1944. Originally, this building was part of the Grand-Rue, a major street in Strasbourg, before it was renamed in 1963 as a tribute to Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing industry.

Gutenberg Street, where this house stands, now links Gutenberg Square — the historic heart — to the modern axes created during the Great Perceived Age of the 1930s. This neighbourhood, marked by the bombings of the Second World War, saw several buildings rebuilt in the 1950s. The house of the seventeenth century, spared or restored, illustrates the resilience of the Strasbourg heritage in the face of urban upheavals.

Prior to 1962, the current address (22 rue Gutenberg) corresponded to 133 Grand-Rue, reflecting the toponymic evolution of Strasbourg. The Grand-Rue, divided into two sections after the Grand-Percée, was already structured from the Middle Ages into an upper part (Obere Strasse) and a lower part, foreshadowing the present Gutenberg Street. This historical cutting underscores the ancient anchoring of this road in the urban fabric.
