Origin and history

The house located at 20 rue Gutenberg in Strasbourg (formerly 131 Grand-Rue) is a building dating from the 16th-17th century, of which the historical monument was classified by order of 25 June 1929. This building is located in a district marked by the urban history of Strasbourg, between the medieval Grand-Rue (divided in 1963) and the modern transformations linked to the Great Percée of the 1930s. Gutenberg Street, created in 1963, honours the inventor Johannes Gutenberg, although the monument itself had no direct connection with this character.

The Grand-Rue, of which this house was once part, was already distinguished in the Middle Ages between a high street (Obere Strasse) and a low part. The 1944 bombing destroyed several neighbouring buildings, resulting in reconstructions in the 1950s. The current address (20 Gutenberg Street) reflects this urban recomposition, while GPS coordinates suggest an approximate location in the historical area near Gutenberg Square.

The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight the heritage importance of the Oriel, an architectural element typical of the Alsatian houses of the Renaissance. No information is provided on the current use of the building (visit, rental, etc.), or on any historic owners or sponsors. The accuracy of the location is assessed as poor (note 5/10), depending on the Merimée base.
