Origin and history
The house in Bourganeuf, New Aquitaine, is a civil building dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, representative of the urban architecture of this period. Its ground floor preserves two fronts framing a broken arched entrance gate, typical medieval vestige. The windows on the floors, although partially modified, illustrate two distinct styles: a Renaissance frame for the central window on the first floor, and a flamboyant decor for the one on the right. These stylistic details suggest successive changes or additions over the centuries.
The windows on the second floor also feature Renaissance frames, confirming the influence of this artistic movement on the transformations of the facade. It ends with a molded cornice decorated with a doucin, a characteristic decorative element. Classified as a Historical Monument in 1963 for its facade on the square, this house bears witness to the architectural evolutions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in a then prosperous city, as evidenced by the details preserved despite the disappearance of the original stone crosses.
Located in 8 Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, this house is part of the built heritage of Bourganeuf, commune of the Creuse department (New Aquitaine region). Its state of conservation and its location make it a notable example of bourgeois or commercial housing of the 15th and 16th centuries, when the city played a regional economic role. The accuracy of its location is estimated as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10), according to available data.
