Origin and history

This merchant house, located in Roscoff, Brittany, was built around 1560 during a town planning operation in the area. The house, served by an exterior staircase on a posterior façade, illustrates the period's commercial architecture. Its foundations and garden walls are bathed by the sea, accessible via a historic servitude path.

In the 17th century, the house was enlarged with a north wing along the way, while in the 18th century, panelling was added. The west room on the ground floor features a chimney lintel decorated with a lions shield, a likely symbol of a merchant. Coat vaulted cellars were used to store barrels and goods, highlighting its commercial role.

A panelled and painted room from the early 19th century, set up in the northern wing, was used to observe the coast. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1997, this house bears witness to Roscoff's port and architectural history, combining residential, commercial and defensive functions.
