Façade sur cour et la porte donent sur la rue de la Liberté : inscription by order of 3 June 1932

Origin and history

The House called Hostellerie du Puits de l'Image is a 15th century building located in Lapalisse, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is located on Rue de la Liberté and is distinguished by its facade on courtyard and medieval door, characteristic of the civil architecture of this period. Originally, this building housed a hostel, a welcoming place for travellers and merchants crossing the region.

The Hostellerie du Puits de l'Image was listed as historical monuments on 3 June 1932. This protection specifically concerns the façade overlooking the courtyard and the 15th century door opening onto the Rue de la Liberté. The door, with a nude tympanum, opens onto a staircase with a central core, while two windows of the same period, with ground supports and frames decorated with toers and gorges, testify to medieval craftsmanship.

The building illustrates the role of hostelleries in the Middle Ages, which served as relays for travel and trade. In Bourbonnais, the region to which Lapalisse belongs, these establishments were essential to structure the communication networks and support the local economy, marked by agriculture, crafts and the passage trade.
