Origin and history
The house at 4 rue du Haut-Koenigsburg in Bergheim (High Rhine) is a remarkable example of Alsatian civil architecture in the second half of the seventeenth century. Its wooden gable, slightly corbelled, rests on sandstone crows, while chevron gable posts highlight its structure. The house, whose facade overlooks the Place du Docteur-Pierre-Walter, keeps a door in the middle of a curved hanger and a wooden screw staircase with carved core. An addiction, dated 1687 by an inscription on the door of the pantry, completes the whole.
The decorative elements include segmental arch windows pierced in the 18th century, as well as a carved shield representing two cross swords and bearing the date 1617, probably linked to an armsmith activity (initials C. H.). The carriageway door between the outbuildings bears the same emblem, suggesting a link between the constructions. The building has been partially redesigned, as evidenced by the removal of a skylight in the croup and the transformation of a dependency into a dwelling.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 13 June 1929, this house illustrates the evolution of constructive techniques in Alsace, mixing medieval tradition (columbing) and Baroque influences (windows in segmental arch). Its inscription specifically concerns the facade and roof, thus preserving an architectural heritage characteristic of the region.
The site is located at an address historically linked to the Bergheim market, today place of the Doctor-Pierre-Walter. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its interest in the study of Alsatian rural habitat of the 17th and 18th centuries, marked by artisanal and agricultural activities (celler, stable, corbelling courier).
