Origin and history
The house at 25 Raspail Street in Limoges, built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, is an architectural testimony of this period. It is distinguished by two doors in basket cove decorated with ironwork, rare elements and protected since 1946. These details reflect the expertise of the limougeaud artisans of the time, combining functionality and aesthetics.
In the centre of the façade, an engraved vintage (1777) serves as a starting point for radiant volutes, a decorative motif typical of the late rococo style. These volutes, intertwined in harmonious curves, highlight the influence of the decorative arts of the Enlightenment century in the region. The building, though modest, illustrates the evolution of limousine bourgeois houses, where metallic ornamentation is gaining importance.
Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 3 October 1946, only wrought iron impost (cadastral reference EH 185) enjoys this protection. This choice highlights the heritage value of ironwork elements, often neglected in favour of stone structures. The location, in the city centre of Limoges (Haute-Vienne), reinforces its historical interest in a district marked by handicrafts and commerce in the eighteenth century.
