Origin and history

The house of Azereix, built in 1798, illustrates the neoclassical civil architecture of the late eighteenth century in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Its one-storey rectangular plan is distinguished by facades rhythmized by a horizontal stone strip highlighting slightly curved windows. The front door, framed by flat pilasters decorated with stylized floral motifs, is surmounted by a decorative shell, a characteristic element of the late Louis XVI style. To the west, the building extends through commons including a barn, reflecting both residential and agricultural use.

Inside, the ground floor preserves original elements such as fireplaces and woodwork in the living and dining room, testifying to the care given to the interior decoration. The wooden staircase, the centrepiece of the monument, presents a ramp carved with floral motifs, while the landing has animal figures (a dog and a donkey), unusual detail for the time. The stairwell, with a wooden-ribed dome, highlights the aesthetic ambition of the owners. Classified as a Historical Monument in 1988 for its facades, roofs, staircases and gate, this house embodies the rural bourgeois heritage of Occitanie.

The location of the house, between rue des Pyrénées and rue du Turan in Azereix, confirms its anchoring in the historic urban fabric of the village. The adjacent commons, typical of the affluent properties of the time, suggest a farm associated with the residence. The listing of Historic Monuments covers specific architectural elements (cadastre AC 153), ensuring their preservation.
