Façades and roofs on street and their reverses on the courtyard (North-West, West and South) (Box HO 86): inscription by order of 17 February 1989
Origin and history
The house at 12 rue des Tours in Lille is a historic monument dating from the 1st quarter of the 18th century. This civil building illustrates the Lille residential architecture of this period, marked by characteristic facades and roofs. Its exterior elements, including the facades and roofs overlooking the street and their backs on the courtyard (northwestern, western and southern sides), were included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 17 February 1989. This protection applies specifically to the cadastral plot HO 86.
Lille, at the beginning of the 18th century, was a city in full economic expansion, thanks to its textile industry and its strategic commercial role at the borders of the Kingdom of France. The bourgeois houses of that time often reflected the prosperity of their owners, with neat facades and interior fittings adapted to the emerging comfort of the time. This type of building, although apparently modest, is evidence of the increasing urbanization and enrichment of part of the population of Lille, while being part of the dense architectural fabric of the city.
The location of this house, in the historic centre of Lille, is indicated with average accuracy (level 5 of 10 depending on the sources). Two addresses are mentioned: one official in the Mérimée base (12 rue des Tours, 59160 Lille), and another approximate from the GPS coordinates (5 rue des Tours, 59800 Lille). These differences could be explained by urban changes or geolocation errors. No information is available about its access to the public, its current purpose or any services offered (visits, accommodation).
