Origin and history

The house at 55, rue du Général-de-Gaulle in Wasselonne is an 18th-century civil building, typical of the Alsatian architecture of this period. Built in stoneware rubbish with bossing chains, it is distinguished by a stone cornice and a broken roof. Its most remarkable element is a bas-relief above the front door, dating from 1762, representing a tanner and his tools, accompanied by the initials JDL and MLR. This decoration is complemented by trade emblems (scrapers) and a statue of the Virgin with the Child, polychrome, measuring about 50 cm.

The sculpted door-chambranle, re-used in the 17th century, and the ground floor market bay (XIX century) testify to the transformations that the building underwent. Only the bas-relief has been protected as historical monuments since the decree of 28 April 1931. The house thus illustrates local craftsmanship (tannery) and architectural evolutions over centuries, while integrating religious and professional elements characteristic of pre-industrial Alsace.

The historic address, initially Grand-Rue, reflects the urbanization of Wasselonne, the town of Lower Rhine (code Insee 67520) located in the Great East. The accuracy of its location is considered poor (note 5/10), but its heritage interest lies in the combination of civil, religious and artisanal elements, rare for a private home of that time.
