Facade of the house, including the remains of the former Town Hall: inscription by order of 17 April 1931

Origin and history

The house on 15 rue aux Aulx in Provins is a 16th century building, typical of the civil architecture of this period. It is distinguished by its façade, classified as Monument Historique by decree of 17 April 1931, as well as by the remains of the former Town Hall which are integrated in it. These protected elements testify to the historical and administrative importance of the building in the medieval and reborn urban context of Provins, a city that was then prosperous thanks to its commercial role and renowned fairs.

In the 16th century, Provins, located in Île-de-France in the current Seine-et-Marne department, was a dynamic city marked by its medieval past and its economic activity. The houses of that time often reflected the wealth of local merchants or notables, while sometimes serving as places of power, as evidenced by the remains of the Town Hall in this house. Their preservation, like that of this house, makes it possible today to understand the urban and architectural evolution of the region, between Gothic heritage and Renaissance influences.
