Origin and history

The house of architect Julien Heulot, located in Champigny-sur-Marne, was designed in 1931 as a total work of art. It is distinguished by its apparent red brick architecture, deployed on two levels with terraces and flat balconies. This hybrid monument is inspired by several currents: the Arts and Crafts style, the Modern Movement (functionality and absence of ornaments), and the Prairie houses of Franck Lloyd Wright. Its originality lies in the sobriety of the decor, limited to the sets of volumes, polychromy and brick reliefs.

Classified as a Historic Monument, the house has been fully protected since 2013, including the garden, fence walls and original furniture. His architect, Julien Heulot, merged disparate influences into a functional and aesthetic home, reflecting the architectural experiments of the inter-war period. The exact location, 108 Marx-Dormoy Avenue, is documented in the Merimée base, although the cartographic accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10).

The building illustrates a pivotal period when French architecture explores new paths, between artisanal heritage and radical modernity. His inscription in the title of Historic Monuments underscores his heritage value, both for his formal audacity and for his testimony of the international currents that marked the twentieth century.
