Origin and history

The house fort des Grand'Maisons is a 15th century building located in the commune of Cogny, south of the village, on a hillside. This monument is distinguished by its gilded stone architecture, typical of the region, with two housing bodies aligned north-south. The east gables are pierced with sill windows, while the attic lights up with small square openings. A square tower with a bell tower dominates the whole south, accompanied by an inner round tower probably dedicated to the watch.

The history of this strong house remains poorly documented. We only know that in 1750, Espinay's family, then owner, sold it to Claude Picard. No information is available on its origins or previous occupants. Sources only mention this transaction as a proven historical event.

Architecturally, the house fort of the Grand'Maisons combines defensive elements (watch tower, height position) and residential elements (logis, open windows). The golden stone, emblematic material of Lyon, and the layout of the buildings reflect the fortified bourgeois buildings of the late Middle Ages in this region. No significant events or major changes are reported from available sources.
