Origin and history

The House of Walls in Delle rises on both sides of a part of the wall of the urban enclosure, testifying to its integration into the fortifications of the city. Built from the second half of the 16th century, it replaces an older building and undergoes major changes in the 18th century. Its architecture combines an irregularly laid house, a polygonal stair tower protruding to the north, and communes to the east. Inside, 18th century decorative elements are still visible today.

The building, purchased by the department of the Territory of Belfort in 1822, housed the local gendarmerie until 1976, marking its anchor in the institutional life of Delle. Classified as a Historic Monument in 2012, the protection covers the entire house, excluding the southeast building body (now restaurant) and a reported wooden gallery. Municipal property, its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.

The location of the House of Walls, at the address 1 Place de la République (or 1 Place Raymond Forni according to the sources), underscores its central role in the urban fabric of Delle. Its history reflects the architectural and functional evolution of a defensive, residential and administrative building, typical of the small fortified towns of Franche-Comté. However, the accuracy of its geographical location is considered poor (note 5/10), according to the Merimée data.
