Origin and history

The Hotel de l'Election is a private hotel located in Troyes, in the Aube department, at 26 rue de la Monnaie. Built after the large fire of 1524, it illustrates the typical woodpan architecture of the Troyan Renaissance, with a remarkable corbellation. Originally, it was built by Michel Drouot, drapier and mayor of Troyes between 1536 and 1538, reflecting the prestige of local market elites.

In 1628, the building became the seat of the election after its acquisition by King Louis XIII, a function which he retained until 1754. The election designated a tax district under the Old Plan, and it symbolized the Royal Tax Authority. The hotel once had a stair turret on the courtyard, whose roof was destroyed in 1903 by fire. Only lead spur, handcrafted work pushed back by hammer, was saved and is now preserved at the Museum Saint-Loup de Troyes.

Ranked a historic monument since 1933, the Hôtel de l'Electoral is a testament to both the urban history of Troyes and the administrative transformations of the Kingdom of France. Its street façade, protected by decree, embodies the civil architectural heritage of Champagne, mixing medieval heritage and renaissant influences. The building remains a marker of the economic and political importance of Troyes in the 16th and 17th centuries.
