The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Gerbépal, located in the Vosges department, finds its origin in the sixteenth century in the form of a chapel. The present building dates mainly from the late seventeenth century, marked by a major reconstruction in 1684, as evidenced by the date engraved on its porch. This overhaul includes the addition of a Renaissance-style stone altarpiece, a notable architectural element of the era.

The nave of the church is decorated with many stained glass windows, and a complete restoration was carried out in 1866 to preserve its integrity. A local legend, reported in Legends and Rivers in the land of the Lakes, evokes a picturesque event linked to the renovation of the bell tower. A parishioner named Jean-Nicolas, by laying the last slates, would have lost foot and found himself hanging on the clock needle before being saved. This episode, celebrated by a festive meal offered by the parish priest, illustrates the attachment of the inhabitants to their church and the risks associated with the restoration work of the period.

The building is part of the religious landscape of the Hautes-Vosges, a region marked by rooted Christian traditions and architectural heritage often linked to local activities, such as logging or handicrafts.
