Origin and history

The chapel Notre-Dame-des-Pins de La Palmyre, located in the commune of Mathes in Charente-Maritime, was inaugurated in October 1991. It replaces a first chapel deemed too small for local cultural needs. Its distinctive architecture is characterized by the absence of side walls, opening largely on the surrounding pine forest. The structure is based on a maritime pine frame, supported by pillars, and has four spans. A zenithal opening above the altar allows natural lighting, while a discreet sacristy is arranged in an angle of the choir.

The chapel is situated in a landscape of dunes and pine trees, in the heart of La Palmyre, a tourist district on the peninsula of Arvert. This place of worship, designed to harmonize with its forest environment, reflects a desire for landscape integration and architectural simplicity. The first chapel, whose precise history is not detailed in the sources, was destroyed to give way to this current building, more adapted to religious practices and the natural setting.

Unlike traditional churches, this chapel is distinguished by its opening to the outside, symbolizing a close relationship between spirituality and nature. Its location in a tourist area also suggests a potential role for visitors, in addition to its initial religious function. Local materials, such as sea pine, highlight its regional anchoring and respect for the surrounding dune ecosystem.
