Origin and history
The church Saint-Denis de Goussonville, located in the Yvelines department in Île-de-France, is a religious building built mainly in the 3rd quarter of the 16th century. Although its bell tower and part of its structure date from this period, a span of Romanesque style remains, reflecting an older origin, probably in the 12th century. This architectural mix illustrates the stylistic evolutions and the partial reconstructions suffered by the monument over the centuries.
The bell tower, characteristic of the church, is surmounted by a building, a two-sided roof typical of Renaissance religious architecture. Inside, the building houses several remarkable elements, including a painting depicting Saint Roch and a statue of the Virgin with the Child. Two other statues, Marie-Madeleine and Sainte-Vierge, are officially classified as historical monuments, highlighting their artistic and heritage value.
The church Saint-Denis is attached to the parish of the same name and was inscribed in the historical monuments by order of 17 February 1950. This protection recognizes its historical and architectural importance, as well as its role in the local religious heritage. The contractor identified for part of the work is Jean Brillant, although his exact involvement in the construction or renovation of the building is not detailed in the available sources.
Located at 15 Rue des Coutures in Goussonville, the church is administratively dependent on the municipality, as evidenced by its Insee code (78281). Its conservation status and location, assessed as "passable" (level 5/10), reflect the challenges of preserving rural monuments. Available sources, including Wikipedia, Monumentum and the Merimée database, provide additional information on its history and architectural features.
