Origin and history
Saint-Martial de Saint-Martial-le-Mont church, in the Creuse department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, dates from the 13th to 14th century boundary. It illustrates the architectural transition between primitive Gothic and the defensive adaptations of the lower Middle Ages. His patronage belonged to the Moutier Abbey of Ahun, emphasizing his regional religious importance. The building consists of a nave of three vaulted bays of warheads, the last of which forms a choir with a flat bedside, decorated with carved capitals. A forum, added between the late 15th and 16th centuries, bears witness to subsequent developments.
The structure underwent notable changes, such as an elevation and fortification in the 14th century, reflecting the tensions of the time. A broken routed gate, decorated with yousures and sheltered under an awning, marks the western facade. Inside, a cross beam was installed after the collapse of a vault key, caused by the wide range of warheads. The church, classified as a historic monument in 1969, retains remarkable architectural elements, such as heads carved on capitals and a moulure archvolt cord.
The building, owned by the municipality, remains a testimony of limousine religious architecture, mixing spiritual functions and practical adaptations. Its listing in the inventory of historical monuments highlights its heritage value, while inviting to discover its history through its preserved architectural details, such as the foothills and the formationets of the nave.
