Origin and history

The church of Saint-Martial de Dunet is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Dunet, in the department of Indre, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Built in the 13th century, it belongs to the natural region of Boischaut Sud and belongs to the archdiocese of Bourges. Its architecture is characterized by a unique nave and a square bell tower covered with slates, deported to the left of the nave. The building has been listed as a historic monument since October 11, 1930, recognizing its heritage value.

The interior structure of the church consists of three vaulted spans of nerved ridges with oric profile, resting on four columns. The doubles and formets fell on pilasters, a relatively rare architectural arrangement for the time. The capitals, decorated with foliage, add a decorative touch to the whole. The bell tower, positioned at the north corner of the facade, completes this typical composition of 13th century rural churches.

The church of Saint-Martial depends on the dean of the Val de Creuse and the parish of Saint-Benoît-du-Sault. It is owned by Dunet and remains an architectural and historical testimony of the region. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments in 1930 underlines its importance in the religious and cultural heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire.
