Origin and history

The Saint-Martin de Fontenilles Church, listed as a Historic Monument, is a 16th-century Gothic building located in the commune of Fontenilles, Haute-Garonne (Occitanie). It presents a Latin cross plan with a three-sided bedside, typical of the religious architecture of this period. The columns of the chapels are decorated with sculpted bands representing pamps, badges and human figures, adding an artistic and symbolic dimension to the building. The bell tower, of the gable type, has five bays in full hanger, a notable architectural characteristic.

The church portal is Romanesque, suggesting an older origin, possibly linked to the ancient church mentioned as belonging to the 14th century in the Saint-Etienne chapter. This duality of styles, combining Gothic and Romanesque elements, bears witness to the architectural evolutions and successive restorations of the building. The church was listed as a Historic Monument by order of June 25, 1979, thus recognizing its heritage value.

Available information indicates that the church is owned by the municipality of Fontenilles. Its precise location, 9 Place Sylvain Darlas, is documented in the Merimée and Monumentum bases. Despite important restorations, the building retains significant architectural elements that bear witness to the region's religious and artistic history.
