Origin and history
The Saint-Martin church of Landivy is a Catholic building located in the village of Landivy, on the edge of the departmental road 31, in the department of Mayenne. It replaces a medieval sanctuary dedicated to Saint Martin, originally given to the Abbey of Saint-Joui in Marnes. This first building, which became too small, included an external advance for the Chapter meetings.
The present church was built between 1874 and 1879 by architect Eugène Hawke, known for having also designed the Basilica of Our Lady of Pontmain. The project, estimated at 100,000 francs, adopts a Latin cross plan. The choir, decorated with archatures, houses stained glass windows depicting biblical figures such as Saint Erneeus, St Peter and St Paul, as well as scenes from the New Testament.
Inside, banners illustrate episodes of the life of Saint Martin, patron saint of the church. These decorative elements, combined with neo-Gothic architecture, reflect the religious and community importance of the place in the 19th century. The building is part of the local Christian heritage, marked by regional influences and a reinterpreted medieval heritage.
