Origin and history
Saint-Pierre de Balesmes Church is a Catholic religious building located in the former municipality of Balesmes, now attached to Descartes en Indre-et-Loire. Built in the 12th century, it illustrates the Romanesque architecture typical of the region, with a single-nave Latin cross plan. Its vaults combine warheads and half cupolas, while some stained glass windows come from the Towers workshop. The porch, added in the 18th century, bears witness to a later restoration phase.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 7 May 1908, the church is a preserved example of the religious heritage of Tourangeau. Its location at Balesmes, Place Pierre-Bérégovoy, reflects its historical anchor in this territory. Architectural changes, such as the enlargement of the 11th century (mentioned in some sources) and the works of the 18th century, highlight its evolution over the centuries.
The building preserves characteristic elements of Romanesque art, such as its vaulted apses and apsidioles in half-coupoles. Although its exact location has been clarified (88 Avenue François Mitterrand), its role in local community life remains marked by its status as communal property and its potential openness to the public. References to books such as the Dictionnaire des communes de Touraine confirm its importance in regional history.
