Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Villers-Saint-Paul, located in the Oise, is a remarkable religious building combining a 12th century Romanesque nave with a 13th century Gothic choir. Its originality lies in the unusual position of its bell tower, placed between the north crusillon and the choir, as well as in the richness of its sculptures, especially the modillons and capitals of the nave. The nave, with its large arcades in third-point among the first of the department, and its sculpted cornices of various motifs, bears witness to a stylistic transition between the 11th and 12th centuries.

The choir, completed around 1225, is distinguished by its unique plan, with crucifixes and side chapels of two successive spans, and an abundance of windows offering generous lighting. Unlike many churches in the region, Villers-Saint-Paul never underwent major changes after its completion, thus preserving its authenticity. Ranked a historic monument in 1862, it was spared radical restorations, although work was carried out in 1894-1895 to repair roofs and walls.

The origins of the church are linked to local history, notably the presence of a Benedictine priory dependent on the abbey of Fécamp, which played an important role in the seigneury of the village. The construction of the nave, dated the first quarter of the 12th century by Eugene Lefèvre-Pontalis, is inspired by regional models such as the church of Saint-Leu-d'Esserent. The capitals, of an archaic style reminiscent of the 11th century, and the large arcades in third-point, rare for the time, underline the architectural innovation of the building.

The Western portal, of Romanesque inspiration, is a sculptural masterpiece with its five vestures and richly decorated modillons. The lateral elevations of the nave, decorated with unique cornices in the Beauvais, and the 32-metre bell tower, on floors pierced with geminate bays, add to the singularity of the building. Inside, the four-parted vaults of the choir and the arches clad with window bases illustrate the elegance of early Gothic architecture.

The church houses remarkable furniture, including 14th and 15th century statues, medieval funeral slabs, and a 13th century window fragment representing the Virgin with the Child. These elements, classified as historical monuments, reflect the artistic and historical richness of the site. Despite occasional restorations, such as that of the liturgical pool after a fire in 1923, the building retained its structural and decorative integrity, making it a rare testimony of medieval art in Picardia.
