Origin and history
The church of Saint-Sulpice de Marignac, located in the Charente-Maritime department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, is a religious building emblematic of the Romanesque style. Built in the 12th century, it presents an original clover-shaped plan, known as triconch, characterized by a transept whose arms end in apses. This rare architectural part is highlighted by committed columns, false archatures and modillons adorned with polychrome geometric motifs, as described by F. de Chasseloup Laubat in his study on the Romanesque Saintonge (1961).
The nave, bent in the 14th century, contrasts with the eight-sided octagonal dome of the transept cross, supported by geminate double arches. These structural elements, like the unfinished bell tower, reflect medieval technical adaptations to stabilize the building. Inside, a frieze adorns the apses: it represents animals and characters intertwined in foliage (chorus), or mimics the strigilles of the ancient sarcophagi (transepts), testifying to varied artistic influences.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 15 February 1896, the church illustrates the Romanesque religious heritage of the Saintonge. Its official protection underscores its architectural and historical importance, while preserving unique details such as modillons and exterior decorations. Owned by the municipality of Marignac, it remains a place of memory and worship, accessible to the public according to local modalities.
