Western Facade: Registration by Order of 28 February 1955

Origin and history

The church Saint-Hilaire de Saint-Hilaire-de-Villefranche is a religious building located in the department of Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the 12th century, it is a typical example of the Romanesque architecture of this period, with decorative elements such as interlaces on the capitals and archvolts of the facade.

The western façade of the church is particularly remarkable. It opens by a door made up of two windows supported by short columns, whose capitals and abacus are decorated with interlaces. An archvolt, also decorated with interlacing, frames these yousures. Above the door, a tablet is supported by modillons. A carved stone, embedded in the front to the right of the door, represents a character seated with another person lying on his knees, adding a historical mystery to the building.

The bell tower is located on the southern facade, while the bedside, illuminated by Gothic-style windows, shows a subsequent architectural evolution. The church was listed as historic monuments by order of 28 February 1955, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The protection specifically concerns the western facade, a key element of its architectural identity.

The building is now owned by the commune of Saint-Hilaire-de-Villefranche. Its exact address, according to the Merimée base, is 4 Avenue de Saintes, in the same village. Although the information on its current accessibility (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified, its status as a historical monument makes it a place of interest for lovers of religious and architectural heritage.
