Origin and history

The Saint-Léger church of Ruffey-lès-Beaune, located in the Côte-d-Or, is a Romanesque building built in the 12th century. It was profoundly reshaped in the 15th century (ca. 1462) under the impulse of Abbé Grignard, then parish priest of the village, in a context where the Duchy of Burgundy, led by Philippe le Bon, reached its cultural and political climax. Its architecture, described as "burgondo-flamand" style, reflects this lavish period before Burgundy joined the Kingdom of France in 1480. The glazed tiles, emblematic of the region, recall those of the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune and give the building a marked visual identity.

In the 18th century, the church underwent minor modifications, but it was at the end of the 19th century that it underwent a major restoration under the direction of Charles Switzerland, architect of the Historical Monuments and pupil of Viollet-le-Duc. The construction site, which was also attended by sculptor Xavier Schanosky and painter Porcherot, was designed to reconstruct and preserve the building, which was then classified by order of 7 August 1995. The church thus embodies nearly nine centuries of local history, mixing medieval heritage, ducal influences and modern heritage interventions.

The building is singularized by its imposing bell tower, visible from a distance, and its roof in varnished tiles, a artisanal Burgundy know-how. These features, coupled with its inscription as the Historical Monuments, make it a major architectural testimony of the transition between the Middle Ages and the contemporary era in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its history also reflects the region's religious and political dynamics, from the Romanesque period to the 19th century nationalist restoration.
