Church: Order of 2 March 1921

Origin and history

The church Saint-Louis de Montigny-aux-Amognes is a religious building built in the 12th century. Located in the commune of Montigny-aux-Amognes, in the department of Nièvre (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté), it embodies the Romanesque architecture typical of this period. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 2 March 1921 bears witness to its heritage value and its importance for the local heritage.

The location of the church, specified as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), is confirmed by its official address: 4 Rue de l'Eglise, 58130 Montigny-aux-Amognes. Owned by the commune, it is mentioned in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 58176, attached to the borough of Nevers. Although available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not detail its current use, its protected status underscores its historical and cultural role in the community.

The twelfth century, the period of construction of the church, corresponds to an era marked by the rise of religious buildings in Burgundy, often linked to the influence of monastic orders or to local piety. These churches served as places of worship, but also as gathering points for the inhabitants, reflecting the social and spiritual organization of the medieval villages. Their architecture, often sober and robust, met both liturgical and defensive needs of the time.
