Saint Pierre Chanel - Church patron Missionary and canonized martyr.

Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre-Chanel is a religious building located in Rillieux-la-Pape, in the Rhône department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It was built in 1974 as part of the Work of the Cardinal's Buildings, an initiative to build churches in expanding urban areas. His name pays tribute to Saint Peter Chanel, missionary and martyr of the nineteenth century canonized by the Catholic Church.

The church has been the scene of significant events, as the prayer vigil organized on 6 October 2017 in memory of the victims of the attack at the Saint Charles station in Marseille. More recently, on 3 October 2020, an accident damaged one of its side walls, causing a fire to start after a car hit the building.

Built in a context of growing urbanization, this church illustrates the adaptation of religious architecture to the needs of new parishes in the Lyon suburbs. Its recent history also reflects the contemporary challenges facing places of worship, between community roles and external vulnerabilities.
