Origin and history
The church Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul des Grandes-Chapelles, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. It was partially rebuilt in the 16th century, reflecting two distinct architectural periods: Romanesque style for its medieval foundations and Renaissance elements for its later additions. The church's collaterals were abolished in 1819, changing its original structure. Among its most notable elements are a lead bentier integrated into a Corinthian capital, as well as a 1608 wall painting depicting the recently restored Crucifixion. A burial place, a Christ on the cross of the 16th century, and a reliquary chassus dedicated to Saint Pétronille complete this artistic and historical ensemble.
In 1789, the church was the seat of a cure dependent on the Grand Dean of Troyes, with tithes attributed to the chapter of Saint Peter of that same city. This building was classified as historic monuments in 1990, recognizing its heritage value. Inside, a pulpit to preach in 16th-century oak, classified in 1913, and a statue of the polychrome nursing Virgin of the school of Troyes, classified in 1911 and restored in 2007, testify to the artistic richness of the period. A 16th century stained glass window depicting the tree of Jesse adds to the diversity of the works present.
The church, owned by the commune of Grandes-Chapelles, is located at 1 Rue de la Poste. Its address is referenced in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 10166, confirming its territorial anchoring in the Aube department. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, thus facilitating its identification and visit. Protected elements include the entire building, as defined by the 1990 Classification Order.
