Origin and history
The building of the 36bis rue de la Muette in Maisons-Laffitte is a former mansion built between 1834 and 1838 by architect Charles Duval. Sponsored by Charles Chaulieu, professor of piano at the Conservatoire de Paris, composer and founder of the magazine Le Pianiste, this house of notable, known as "Maison Chaulieu", originally incorporated a concert hall, now disappeared. The building, representative of bourgeois architecture of the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, reflects the social status of its sponsor, linked to Parisian artistic circles.
The building has been listed as historical monuments since 18 December 1980, with protection covering its facades and roofs (excluding outbuildings). Transformed into apartments, it nevertheless retains significant architectural elements of its construction period. The exact location, although subject to geographical impreciseness (noted "passible accuracy" in the databases), remains associated with the historical address of 36bis rue de la Muette, in the Yvelines department (Ile-de-France region).
The sources available (Wikipedia, Monumentum) underline the dual interest of the monument: architectural heritage linked to the urbanization of Maisons-Laffitte in the 19th century, and cultural heritage, due to the profile of its sponsor, is the figure of Parisian musical circles. The destruction of the concert hall and the housing division illustrate the adaptations of this type of building over time.
