Origin and history

Hotel de Bohan is a private hotel located in Bourg-en-Bresse, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built around 1730, it is distinguished by its Regency-style façade and its Louis XV-style ironwork, with an alternation of triangular and rounded frontons. Originally, he belonged to a family of cavalry officers, reflecting the social prestige of his owners.

During the French Revolution in 1794, the hotel was requisitioned to house the missionary of the Republic, Antoine-Louis Albitte. This change in usage illustrates the political upheavals of the time. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it will successively house the offices and printing offices of the Journal de l'Ain (1800-1944), then those of The New Republic (1944-1962) and the Liberator, organ of the New Left. These occupations demonstrate its central role in local media and politics.

Since 1943, the elevation, fence and roof of the Bohan Hotel have been protected as historical monuments. Today, the building houses the office of the mayor of Bourg-en-Bresse and his cabinet, thus continuing its administrative and public vocation. Its architecture and history make it a symbol of the Bressan heritage, mixing aristocratic heritage, revolution, and contemporary municipal life.
