Renaissance gate and its vantail: classification by decree of 18 August 1926

Origin and history

The building in Foix, Ariège, dates from the first quarter of the 17th century. It is distinguished by a Renaissance gate dated precisely from 1617, a rare and preserved architectural element. This wooden panel, adorned with a curved wrought iron bumper and pyramid nails, is framed by a moulded chambranle fixed by relief nails. The upper part is crowned by a dome-shaped sculpted pediment, while the finely worked posts end with carved consoles evoking capitals. A frieze-style entablement and a flower-shaped larmier complete this set, testifying to an exceptional craftsmanship for the time.

The Renaissance Gate and its vantail were classified as Historic Monument by order of August 18, 1926, recognizing their heritage value. This building, located at 1 rue du Rival (or close to rue Jean-Jacques Delescazes according to geolocalized sources), offers a representative example of the civil architecture of the early 17th century in France. Its state of conservation and its sculptural details bear witness to the artistic influences of the late Renaissance in southern France.

The location of the building, although documented, remains approximate, with an accuracy assessed as "passible" (note of 5/10). Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, highlight its importance in the local heritage, without providing information on its current use (visit, rental, etc.). The associated photo, licensed under Creative Commons, allows you to appreciate the details of the door, a central element of its protection.
