Origin and history

The Babut Hotel is a building built in the late 18th century and mainly in the 19th century, located at 9-11 rue Villeneuve in La Rochelle. This building, designed according to a U-shaped plan, is characteristic of private hotels between courtyard and garden. Although its architecture is not homogeneous due to the different periods of construction, some notable elements, such as the cast iron marquise or the stone staircase with wrought iron ramp, testify to its stylistic evolution.

The building belonged to the Babut family, from the bankers of Rochelais, and was registered as historical monuments by order of 2 August 2013. Its interior architecture includes a monumental vestibule with an oak staircase and a zenithal stained glass window, located in the north wing. Today, it is owned by a private company and retains a significant heritage value in the urban landscape of La Rochelle.

The protection of the building covers its totality, including decorative and structural elements, such as the marquise and stairs. Its inscription reflects the importance of preserving the architectural traces of the 18th and 19th centuries in the region, while illustrating the economic and social history of La Rochelle, marked by the influence of bourgeois families such as the Babut.
