Origin and history
The building located at 28 rue d'Iéna in Angoulême dates from the 4th quarter of the 18th century. It is located in a district corresponding to the former hunting reserve of the castle of Angoulême, urbanized in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its location thus reflects the gradual transformation of aristocratic spaces into bourgeois residential areas, typical of this period.
The street façade is distinguished by a careful architectural composition. The ground floor, separated from the first floor by a moulded bandeau, is pierced by a central door framed by two rectangular bays. This door, adorned with a denticle entanglement and volute consoles, supports a wrought iron balcony upstairs. The windows on the first floor, framed with balusters and surmounted by rectangular panels, harmonize with a semi-cylindrical pediment interrupted, highlighting the classical elegance of the building.
Access to the inner courtyard is done by an imposing cochère door, flanked by low walls surmounted by stone balusters. The gate, with a curved opening with a salient key, is crowned with a rectangular entanglement forming cornice. These elements, combined with a monumental stone console supporting the corner wall, illustrate the attention to detail and the mastery of 18th century architectural codes. The building, whose facades, roofs and gates have been protected since 1971, bears witness to the urban and artistic heritage of Angoulême.
The building is part of a historical context marked by the lotion of the former seigneurial reserves, a symbol of the rise of the bourgeoisie and the redefinition of urban spaces. In Angoulême, as in other French cities, this period sees the emergence of a refined residential architecture, combining functionality and aesthetics, intended for a social elite in the midst of a rise.
