Origin and history
The Leiseing building, located at 10-12 rue Michel-de-Bourges, was built in 1930 for the Jacob Leiseing public works company. Directed by architect Louis Rey, this four-level and five-span building embodies modern neo-classicism, with a stone façade and neat architectural details such as metal guardrails. It housed offices on the ground floor and apartments on the floors, equipped with an elevator and a utility room.
The Leising company, which has been active since 1908, played a major role in the large local yards until the 1970s. During the Second World War, the building was requisitioned in 1942 by the German authorities to serve as headquarters for the Gestapo in the Cher. Its façade, roof terrace, vestibule and stairwell were listed at the Historic Monuments in 2001 for their heritage value.
This building illustrates the architecture of the Interwar period in Bourges, alongside the Maison de la Culture and the Jardin des Prés Fichaux. Its style contrasts with that of the neighbouring Post Office Hotel, built in 1926 in a neo-Gothic register. The Regional Conservation of Historic Monuments highlights its originality and architectural quality, representative of the 1930s in France.
