Origin and history
Hotel des Ingénieurs is a mansion located in Saint-Étienne, in the Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the early twentieth century, it illustrates the civil architecture of this period, combining residential and associative functions. Its facades, roofs and stairwell have been protected since 2007, demonstrating its heritage importance.
In 1866, 37 former students of the École des Mines de Saint-Étienne founded the Société amiablee de Saint-Étienne, at the origin of the project. The final programme, established in 1904, includes commercial premises on the ground floor, a café-restaurant, and spaces dedicated to the Society's activities on the upper floors. The architectural contest is won by Godefroi Teisseire and François Clermont, whose facade with high relief marks the identity of the building.
The building combines various uses: a party gallery, salons, a library and offices for the Society's committees. The upper floors house administrative spaces, while the basement houses services such as the kitchen, connected by elevator. The building, still privately owned, reflects Saint-Étienne's associative and industrial spirit at the turn of the 20th century.
