Origin and history
The Niort building, built in the 2nd half of the 19th century, adopts a U-plan close to its original configuration, visible on the Napoleonic cadastre. The access is made by a covered passage leading to an inner courtyard, typical of bourgeois houses of the time. Only the south wing, a vestige of an earlier construction, preserves features of the eighteenth century, such as its curved windows and its stone balustrade, although its facade was receded in later transformations.
The central body houses a large living room adorned with 19th-century woodwork and stucco, potentially from another residence and reassembled on site. These decorations, protected by a 1995 decree, bear witness to the refinement of bourgeois interiors. In the east, a wing in return for square includes a greenhouse or orangery, extended to the bottom of the garden, illustrating the importance of spaces dedicated to botany and amenities in the residential architecture of this period.
The location of the building, 64 rue Saint-Gelais in Niort, is attested by the Merimée and Monumentum bases, although GPS coordinates suggest an approximate address (2bis Rue Jard Panvilliers). The monument, partially protected (living room and its decor), reflects the urban and architectural evolutions of Niort, between 18th century heritage and 19th century modernizations. No information is available on its current use (visits, rentals, etc.).
